Those present were Jay Larson, Jim Elithorp, Steve Baker, Glen Tenney, Steve Garcia, Scott Hennefer, Dean Bret Murphy, Jan King, and Penny Ronk (Support Staff). Graduates December 2007: 1 BAS – Digital Information 5 BAS – Management in Technology II. BAS Degree Applicants Reviewed: Digital Information Emphasis 2 Accepted Instrumentation Emphasis 7 Accepted Land Survey/Geomatics Emphasis 3 Accepted Management in Technology 11 Accepted – 3 Postponed Total Applicants Accepted: 23 Other Concerns: Jay asked all attendees to re-visit the website and catalog for updates or program revisions. Any revisions in the website should be conveyed to SIS Ops to be forwarded to Susanna Dorr. The 8-year course map should be included on the website to assist students in planning their course sequence to complete a degree. Bret will check the website for this element. The subject of students being blocked from enrolling in upper division classes due to prerequisites not processed from transfer classes was discussed. Jim noted that it has proved simpler for his Land Survey/Geomatics students not to have prerequisites on the SUR classes. After a discussion with the students, he can usually determine if they have the necessary preparation for the upper division coursework. He has found that this “student-driven articulation” is now working to matriculate students into the Land Survey program. To date, only one student has entered GBC’s Land Survey/Geomatics program from CSN’s AAS-Building Technology program. Students with that background will usually require remedial bridge courses, as noted in the catalog, and supplemental math to prepare them adequately for further Land Survey/Geomatics degree work at GBC. The Mgt 441 taught now by Jay Larson is geared toward the business students’ needs. For the Land Survey/Geomatics distance students who need more math integrated teaching, Jay suggested a package that is self-teaching software supplied by the text author combined with a website that is an add-on to Excel. Using this will prepare the students for Mgt 496 or for an MBA program. Columbia Basin College has invited Jay to testify at the Washington State Board of Education meeting for the BAS degree program. That college wants to begin a BAS degree program like the one we have developed.
