Chairs FROM: Wendy Charlebois RE: UNR/GBC 3+1 Social Work Program Instructor/Coordinator position In 2001 UNR and GBC began a partnership designed to help rural Nevada develop social workers to fill critical positions in public social service agencies. Students participating in this program complete all their gen. ed. requirements, pre-requisites and core Social Work classes through GBC. In their junior year, students must apply to UNR and the UNR School of Social Work. If accepted, they become UNR students their senior year. They take their coursework online but must also travel to UNR once a month for a week-end class. They must complete a 450-hour internship at a social service agency in their respective communities. Upon graduation with their Bachelors degree in Social Work and passing the state Social Work licensing exam, graduates can then work as professional social workers throughout Nevada As of June 30, 2017, I will be retiring after eleven years of employment at and another nineteen and a half years as a social worker with the State of Nevada. I am requesting that my position as Social Work Instructor/coordinator in the UNR/GBC 3+1 Social Work Program be filled upon my retirement. Justification There have been 75 graduates from the social work program in the last 11 years There are 12 rural students in line to graduate in May 2017 Currently there are 76 students with the declared major of social work that have been active in the Spring 2016 and Fall 2016 semesters. This semester there are 27 students enrolled in SW 101 (intro class) Out of the 75 graduates from the 3+1 program 73 have passed their Social Work licensing exam At least 70 of the graduates have become employed in hard to fill positions such as child welfare throughout GBCs service area and in other states. At least 8 of the graduates have gone on to get a Masters in Social Work UNR now has an online MSW program. With a BSW, students who are accepted into the MSW program can get their MSW in 1 full year. (several rural students have already been accepted) With an MSW, graduates can then work toward a clinical license which would then allow them to work in mental health and addictions counseling.
