Pat Anderson Directory There have been many concerns from the faculty over the methods in which information is posted to the website. Over the last several months people have ran into adverse results from the directory. Dr. Curtis and President Helens emails were hacked and a faculty member was part of a financial scam. It has appeared that a lot of the information has come from the directory. Pat has spent a vast amount of time working on how the information is put together, who is responsible for how the information is put together and how it is posted. Pat has met with Human Resources, Sonja Sibert, Frank Sawyer and Kayla Mccarson. The short term fix is to only post the following information to the directory: names, departments, college email address and college phone number. There will be some cell phone numbers posted. Degrees, personal websites and any other personal information will no longer appear. Scott Gavorsky asked why the degrees being listed was an issue. Pat responded that the more information that is available, the more information they have to impersonate you. George Kleeb asked about password protection of the directory page. Long term ideas are ideas such as Truckee Meadows site or University of Nevadas such as column list or search fields. The Safety Committee has not yet been convened to discuss this, but will convene to go over the logistics. Pat asks that for the protection of the staff this go forward without a vote for the time being. George Kleeb motioned for a Sense of the Senate to be called. David Sexton seconded. Motion passed unanimously. senate chair report Information/Possible Action Senate Resolution Chair Rice drafted a resolution added our commitment is added to the budget and not taken off of the bottom due to the fact that we cannot afford to add more compensation without funding from the legislature. Chair Rice spoke with Pres. Helens and looked at budget 101 and have made cuts about everywhere they can. In budget 101, it was pointed out that about 90% of operating budget goes to compensation, which isnt unusual. The reason were at 90% is because weve cut other things out of operations already and we cant afford to cut more out of the bottom of the operating budget in order to compensate faculty. A statement has been added into the resolution that regards more funding for faculty. This includes administrative faculty and teaching faculty (all professional staff). Does not apply to deans and above. George Kleeb motioned to approve and David Sexton seconded. Motion passed unanimously. Summer School Compensation Compensation and Benefits will be taking up the question of summer school compensation. There is a question in regards to the current policy in the NSHE handbook. Each institution does have its own policy, however Great Basins is rather vague and doesnt reflect what is seen in practice. There is a cap on students and a maximum amount of money per credit that can be made at summer school. Summer school is not state funded and is done outside of the contract. The revenue for any class over 16 students goes directly to the institution. President Helens provided a spreadsheet that shows how much revenue faculty provide the institution with summer classes. There is no desire to see 100% of revenue go to faculty because there is an understanding of the overhead involved. The $1200 cap on lower division classes seems to be low and there is a lot of revenue being generated for the institution. There has been no agreement to this cap. There also have not been resolutions in terms of overload. We are out of compliance with GBC policy in terms of overload pay. Brandy Nielsen wants to hear thoughts and information on this matter from the container. She will also send out an email to the faculty requesting this information. Question about discussion on the system level. Chair Rice responded that there is discussion of whether or not summer school should be state funded, but this becomes a legislative issue. Chair Rice will gather more information. Scott Gavorsky stated that he understood that this wasnt mandated but an institutional decision. AAUP on Shared Governance Chair Rice has brought up that some of the other institutions are having challenges with shared governance and we have continued to work well in terms of shared governance. We can always improve in this area, but we are not facing near the challenges that other institutions are having. There is going to be a discussion at the system level regarding. The consensus among the Council of Chairs was that everyone review the AAUP statement on Shared Governance. Chair Rice will send this link to the whole faculty. This is a good reminder on what everyones role is and has worked for a long time. It is threatened by proprietary schools.
